The fraternization of the towns aims to the strengthening of international ties and have mainly cultural and artistic character. The exchanges of delegations of the fraternized towns are made within the frames of twofold and international agreements and are defined by the principle of mutuality.

The town of Xanthi has been fraternised since 1984 with the following four towns:

Gifhorn of North Germany, which is near Hanover at the federal state of Low Saxony. Gifhorn’s population is           5 .000 citizens from whom 2000 are Greek, who have oragnised a Greek Community. Gifhorn is an industrial   t      town, but at its districts there agricultural production. The fraternity protocol between Xanthi and Gifhorn was signed on 30.11.1984 by the Mayor K. Mpenis.

New Belgrade in Serbia, which is the biggest of the 16 Municipals that the capital city of Serbia Belgrade has. New Belgrade, which was built after the end of II World War, has 350.000 citizens. It is an industrial town where lots of Serbian companies have their headquarters. The fraternity protocol between Xanthi and New Belgrade was signed on 11.4.1994 by the Mayor F. Amoirides.

 

Smolyan from Bulgaria, which is situated at the foothills of mountain Pamporovo, at Plvdiv (Filippoupoli) region. Smolyan has 40.000 citizens and it is both agricultural and touristic centre. It has the biggest ski centre in Bulgaria and lots of hotels. The protocol was signed on 28.6.1995 by the Mayor F. Amoirides.

Mpigka from Turkey, is situated in Mysia near Propontida coast and in distance approximately 130 kilometres from Ellispontos. It is about a town built on the region of ancient and Byzantine fountains and near Granikos river (Mpigka Tsai, as it is called today). At Mpigka the old Greek neighbourhood is preserved. The town has 40.000 citizens and industries for agricultural products, while it is a centre of agricultural production. The fraternity protocol was signed on 28.6.2000 by the Mayor M. Stylianides.

 

Mpesiktas from Turkey, is situated at the European coast of Vosporos and belongs to the town planning of Constantinople. From the east it is defined by Vosporos, the district Sarigier at the north, Sisli at the west and Mpeioglou at the south. It is about an urban municipal having 200.000 citizens, including regions of offices and districts of Vosporos having Greek interest. The fraternity protocol between Xanthi and Mpesiktas was signed on 14.12.2007 in Xanthi and on 21.06.2008 at the Municipality of Mpesiktas by the Mayor M. Stylianides.
